Calendula

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is a well-known herb and popular ornamental garden plant that has been used for centuries as food, a dyeing agent, ceremonially, as well as topically and internally for its healthful qualities. According to Ayurvedic healing principles, calendula is considered energetically cooling and has a bitter, pungent taste. Calendula is well know for its anti-inflammatory properties and as a digestive aid. Calendula tincture is slightly bitter with a light floral taste.

Precautions
Persons with allergies to other members of the Asteraceae family (such as feverfew, chamomile, or Echinacea species) should exercise caution with calendula, as allergic cross-reactivity to Asteraceae plants is common. Greek Mullien

Verbascum thapsus is a member of the Figwort or Scrophulariaceae family and is native to Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, and Asia. Mullein, with its distinctive yellow blossoms, has been utilized for its healthful benefits for at least 2,000 years. This herb has a special affinity for the respiratory system and is regarded for its expectorant and demulcent properties. Its energetic actions include cooling, drying, and moistening. It is mildly astringent with an earthy, slightly bitter taste.

Small hairs on mullein leaf may cause mechanical irritation in the mouth and throat if not filtered out of extracts prior to consumption. Tulsi/Lemon Balm

Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) & Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) supports calming mood, mental clarity, anxious belly/mind and aids digestion. Tulsi has been known as a powerful anti-viral as well as a balm for the nervous system, and Lemon Balm is known for its treatment of depression and anxiety as well as calming the nerves.

Precautions
If you are taking sedatives (for insomnia or anxiety) or medications to regulate your thyroid, ask your doctor before taking lemon balm. If you are taking blood thinners please consult with your doctor before taking tulsi.


Ashwaganda

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera ) is considered an overall tonic and adaptogen. In Ayurveda, it is also used to balance various conditions that arise from 'vata dosha' imbalances and is employed as a grounding and nourishing herb, supportive to female well-being. The root is bitter, sweet, and astringent in flavor and energetically mildly warming. Ashwagandha is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine as an adaptogen and a nervine to help cope with stress and supports overall cognitive health*.

Sweet Annie

A relative of Wormwood and Mugwort, Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) is also know for its bitter and cooling nature. A native to China, but now widely grown and naturalized. Sweet Annie is best known for its use in treatment of malaria and its antimicrobial and antiparasitic properties. Sweet Annie’s cooling nature helps clear heat throughout the body.

Sweet Annie has also been found to be effective in treating Lyme’s disease.

Preparations:

Blue Vervain

A visually striking plant, Verbena hastata is a beloved botanical found across North America, especially thriving throughout the Great Plains. Commonly known to support healing depression and anxiety and calms the nervous system. Vervain is also anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic and has been used as a pain reliever as its effects are similar to aspirin. Also is a gentle astringent that’s been used as a mouthwash for sore, inflamed, and bleeding gums; as an eyewash for tired, inflamed eyes; and to help irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), coughs, or asthma. It’s astringency combined with its antispasmodic properties makes it helpful for IBS and relieves constipation. It also boosts kidney and liver function.

General dosage for all is 30-60 drops 1-3x daily or as needed in an ounce or so of water, tea, or juice. Please consult your herbalist, clinical herbalist, or naturopathic doctor to be sure of proper dosage for you.
