Healing with a lead horse and his herd

A note about Joe and working with horses in a healing manner.

I’ve worked with Joe multiple times now under the guidance of Becky and her incredible way of speaking the language of horses. After this weekend, I want to tell you a couple things that I’ve learned from working with Joe in this way.

Within the safe container Becky holds I am given the opportunity to respectfully step into Joe’s energetic space (or his bubble we call it), and in this space my nervous system regulates to his. Horses live in a rest and digest state so this experience of stepping into this energy creates a natural space for my body to follow his.

Joe has taught me what it feels like to be truly safe.

Growing up, in fact most of my life, I never actually had the experience of what it truly feels like to feel safe. I was always on guard, rightly so. I had to take over and do many things a child should not even worry about. I grew up much too fast, as they say. All this time never understanding that I had gone without this feeling of deep groundedness in my body and the ability to feel safe. Every time I work with him, I return to my body, fully present, then given the space to be myself and remove the layers holding me back.

Joe has taught me that I was not holding my healthy boundaries in order to conserve my energy and be in better service to others.

In observing Joe as the leader of his herd, I learn how he conserves his energy while attending to his group. He does this without emotional charge, and with such subtle movement you must really look for it. Although boundary work is a life long practice of learning and shifting your mindset, Joe continually shows me that being a leader means being strong in your needs but also gentle, without the presence of chaos and irrationality. In turn, Joe is teaching me how to be a better leader while in service to my family and others.

In working with, Joe not only have I gained a deep love for him, but more importantly I respect him as the being he is. Joe is a potent teacher and leader. When he comes to you, he sees through you, and mirrors what you bring into his space. If you know this kind of horse work, you already know the simple fact that horses never lie. What they offer you is your current truth and even a clarity on how to shift and release what needs to go.

When it comes to Joe, not only do I listen intently , I am sure to absorb as much as possible.

I have done many therapies in my life (like a lot), and working with horses in this way is the only thing that has immediately shifted my nervous system into a state of rest so that I may see and feel clearly the work in which I need to do for myself. There is nothing quite like working and building a kinship with an animal. They have so much to offer in so many ways.

Humans are not the most important thing on this planet, we never have been. In fact we are not the wisdom keepers either, rather it is the earth, nature itself and all of the beings that have been here as long or longer than us.

When we can learn to be with animals in the way Becky offers, you are able to listen in a deeper more inner way and come back to your center. Horses do not need to be ridden, nor do they don’t need to be trained, when a horse is a horse they are at their most powerful capability. When we allow them to just be, we gain the most insight and healing in our observations.

So, this weekend was yet again another experience of stepping into the powerful, safe container that not only the horses hold but also Becky herself as she guides us through every step, making sure we’re safe all the way through the session while teaching us how to be respectful and gain trust from the entire herd.

I can only try to encourage you to experience this kind of healing work, but I would rather plead with you to do so. When I am in the middle of the experience itself, I remember that everyone needs this very moment, especially now. There is much work to do in one lifetime and I find the most important work we can do is to move forward towards healing ourselves again and again, simply to avoid causing more harm to this beautiful world and all that dwell here. To commit ourselves to the journey of pealing off each layer at a time, not just to heal traumas and empty suitcases filled with limiting beliefs, but in doing this work we shift our DNA, hence we heal our ancestral line. If there is anything needed more during this moment in time, this is it.
